What Is The Best Tackle For Catching Walleye?

 


When I worked at Herbs Sportsman Supplies (a small bait store in Ohio) I would always get asked these types of questions. What is the best tackle and color for catching walleye? I always had the same few answers memorized but not knowing why this was the case. You might find yourself saying I cannot seem to catch any walleye when I go fishing. A lot of things come into effect when you are fishing. Weather, bait, tackle, and water temperature are some of those wildcards. Tackle color and lure type will help change that bad fishing day into one of your better trips. Let us talk about some of the best lures and colors when fishing for walleye.

Walleyes have color vison, so these fish see certain colors better than others. Scientist research shows that the delicious fish can see four colors better than the others. Red, yellow, orange and green are the four best colors to use when looking for tackle to fish for walleye. Darker colors such as blue and violet are harder to see for Walleye. These colors are too dark and may look black to the Walleye. This does not mean you can not catch fish on these colors, but for best fishing results, sticking with those main colors should help with making that fishing trip successful.

There are different types of rigs or lures that can be used when fishing for walleye. I want to tell you about two of these. Walleyes are aggressive hunters. To get their attention just drop your lure near these fish and they will defend their territory. Casting a harness to catch a walleye is one of the ways you can fish for walleye.  Get one of the colors stated above and put a night crawler or your choice of bait on the hook and start casting or trolling. The next lure is the Deep Diver lure. These lures have a slim build and a rounded lip to help this lure dive deeper and faster than most. This means more chances at having those angry walleyes hit your bait and hook. Same things apply to these types of lures. Green, yellow, orange and red are the colors you want to be looking for.

            Lastly, make sure to check with the Department of Natural Resources. They will guide help you fish safely and responsibly, keeping these fish thriving
