Can I Fish For Walleye With Live Bait?

Can you fish for walleye with live bait? The simple answer is yes, however there are select baits that work better than other. Leeches, nightcrawlers, and minnows are three of these live baits commonly used. After selling these three baits for four years at Herbs Sportsman supplies, I noticed these were the most productive types of live bait for walleye fisherman.

Leeches are great for catching walleye when the water temperature is above fifty degrees. The leeches will be lively and swim better when the water is warmer. This will make the walleye (a predator fish) more enticed to eat this bait. This bait is good for shallow-water and deep-water fishing, it is a very versatile bait. Hook this bait through the sucker on the leech’s tail to keep the leech alive longer, making fishing for these delicious fish more successful.

Nightcrawlers were the most common bait we sold for walleye fishing at Herbs Sportsman supplies yearly. We would sell them by flats (fifty dozen or so) to charter captains and ten dozen to one dozen to smaller groups of fishermen. Nightcrawlers are extremely good for walleye fishing once the water temperature is around 60 degrees. Nightcrawlers will move a lot better in warmer water just like leeches. They can be used year-round but work best in warmer water. Worms do not swim but can survive in water for a few weeks due to their skin absorbing oxygen from the water. Hook this bait through the body, covering the hook and leaving a little end dangling to keep the look of a worm.

Minnows are another great bait for Walleye. These fish are very lively and will attract walleye when they are hungry. This one is a little different to me. I have sold minnows to some fishermen for walleye but mainly leeches and nightcrawlers. These bait fish do have the attributes to attract a predator fish like the walleye. Hooking these live baits in one of the most important parts. Hook the minnows through the lip, this will keep the bait fish alive longer and give this bait fish freedom to move. Keeping these bait fish alive longer for them to attract walleye and other fish.
