Benefits Of Hunting Small Game

Small game outtings can be some of the most fun hunts you can go on. Oftentimes, when you find a good habitat for these animals, there is a lot of action and many hunts are successful. Some of the most common small game you can hunt are squirrels, rabbits, ducks, grouse, pheasants, quail, doves, and geese. At first glance, these animals can seem like they may not be worth your time due to their size, so, what are the benefits of hunting small game?

1. Meat

Small game can be an excellent source of meat. While they are not as large, oftentimes you are able to harvest many of them even in just one hunting outing. The amount of animals you are able to harvest makes up for their lack of size and together can yield enough meat that can last for months or even years if you store them correctly.

2. Target Practice

Hunting small game can make for some great target practice. These small animals are typically much more agile than big game. They are also significantly smaller making them harder to hit. The combination of these two things makes them a great way to hone your shooting skills for when you do go after that trophy big game animal. The challenge is also just plain old fun!

3. Introduction to Hunting

Hunting these small critters is also a great way to introduce youth hunters to the sport. For these animals, you don't need large-caliber guns making it easier for young hunters to accel at. It is often the way that the next generation of hunters get into the sport when they begin to come of age. The fast pace and frequency of action keep the young ones engaged and allows them to keep an interest until they develop the patience necessary to hunt big game animals.

Small game hunts are not easy and do take some skill to be successful. The benefits of doing it makes for a great tool to become more successful at other hunts. We highly recommend that you regularly engage in the pursuit of small game, and as always, be sure to check your local rules and regulations before any outing.
