Beginners General Guide to Fishing

First Thing's First

The first thing you should determine is what type of fish you would like to start catching. This is because fish vary greatly in their preferred habitat and behavior. The next thing you should determine is the fishing method that you would like to use. There are 5 common methods of fishing these are bait fishing, fly-fishing, bait casting, spinning, and trolling. (Soon we will have an article to discuss the different types in detail.) These distinctions are important because they will have a significant impact on the decision you make about what gear you will need. The last thing you want as a beginner is to buy the wrong equipment because it can be quite expensive and may not be adequate to get the job done.

Our Recommendations

Having said that, we highly recommend that you go with a rod and spinning reel as a beginner. This is probably the cheapest and easiest method to pick up. It's the fastest way that you can begin fishing as well with just a few minutes spent in your local Wal-mart you can buy everything you need to cast your first line all in one place and at a reasonable price.

Be Responsible

If fishing on public property such as rivers or your local state park, you will first need a fishing license. This might seem a little ridiculous but it is an important step. Not only will the license keep you on the right side of the law, but the money you spend on it also goes directly to supporting conservation efforts in your state.

Don't Be That Guy

Make sure that you touch-up on your fishing etiquette as well. The last thing you want to do when going on your first fishing outing is being the guy who isn't respectful of other anglers in the area. You may not have experienced it quite yet but nobody likes the guy who gets too close to their fishing spot when there is plenty of other waters to be fishing on. DONT BE THAT GUY!

Know Your Knots

Now that you're all brushed up on your etiquette, it's time to prep your bait, whether it's a hook that you intend to put bait on or a good old lure, you need to make sure you get your knot right or it may not survive its first encounter with a fish. There are many types of knots that are great for fishing. Our personal favorite is the clinch. It is fairly simple and can be mastered quickly for newbies. You should become familiar with this knot because, not only is it a very secure way to bait your line, it is also an angler favorite.

Get Out and Fish

Okay, enough reading, it is now time for you to actually get out there and cast a line. Please be sure to always check the regulations set forward by your local park and wildlife department. We've pointed you in the right direction, so go have fun!
